Experience authentic Morocco in a traditional Riad

Author: Tabitha Symonds

Faced with the diversity of the world's second largest continent, how do you end up deciding on a riad in Morocco? There are villas, lodges, cottages and wine estates galore... Made up of 53 countries, and limitless cultures and landscapes, the choices are wide open to you. Staying in a Morocco riad gives you a chance to explore the bustling markets of North Africa where you can wander the labyrinthine alleyways. When you've had enough, why not escape to the refuge of your Morocco riad for your holiday rental - the traditional Moroccan townhouse, set around a courtyard, often with a plunge pool to cool off in, and a rooftop terrace in your riad in Morocco where you can have your sundowner.

Marrakech and Essaouira are just 150km apart but are very different. Both have great charm, and if you have a chance to visit each of them, then do. At the heart of the city of Marrakech
is the Djemaa el Fna square - a thriving scene at any time of day. A riad in Morocco's Marrakech gives you the chance to absorb the city\'s unique rhythm. By day it is little more than a market with the odd street entertainer thrown in for good measure. By night it resonates to a whole different beat. It turns into a carnival of snake charmers, acrobats, clowns, musicians and storytellers. There is nowhere else like it in the whole of Morocco, perhaps in the whole of Africa. A riad in Morocco doesn\'t come more atmospheric than with

the calls of the muezzin drifting through your Morocco riad on the morning breeze. The medina, or old town, is a journey through the Marrakech of the past. A riad in Morocco is a town-house built around a central courtyard opening on to the open sky. On the other hand Essaouira has never really become a tourist trap and is perfect for `escape from it all\' holiday rentals and for finding your perfect riad in Morocco. It has narrow streets which means that
there are not many cars and it\'s curving beach entices people who want to try their hand at a variety of watersports, not least kitesurfing and windsurfing. Reputedly Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley used to hang out in this town; the perfect spot to unwind after a busy few days in Marrakech - a riad in Morocco will be both exotic and magical.

Morocco riads are a unique way of experiencing authentic Morocco and getting to know this country which is steeped in history. If you don\'t want to stay in a city, then Morocco riads can be found on the coast as well - and there\'s over 1500km of coastline to choose from. Or you
might want to seek out your Morocco riad further inland, perhaps in the Atlas mountains where you will find there are tremendous trekking opportunities and mountain vistas abound. If you venture even further south, then your classic riad in Morocco is harder to find, as the mountains give way to the vast Sahara desert and sub Saharan Africa stretches ahead of you....here, away from your riad in Morocco, you can sleep under the stars and go camel
trekking.....life under African skies....
